Bringing the Rodeo to the Hospital

Anyone from Texas knows that the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is more than just an event—it’s a season. For the entire month of March, Houston transforms as it hosts the largest rodeo in the world.

Each night brings a lively carnival, professional rodeo competitions, and big-name concerts. Beyond that, there are livestock shows, agriculture exhibits, shopping, and countless opportunities for families to make lasting memories. For many, it’s a tradition and a highlight of the year.

But for families with children in the hospital, experiencing the rodeo in person isn’t always possible. Large crowds, long days, and ticket prices can make attending out of reach. That’s why we bring the rodeo to them.

This year, we were honored to host two incredible rodeo-themed events for patients at Texas Children’s Hospital.

We kicked things off with our tiniest patients across the NICU, Heart Center, and PICU. These babies come from across the country to receive world-class care in their earliest days, and we believe they deserve to celebrate in a special way. Through our “My First Rodeo” event, we delivered Joy Bags to more than 450 babies, filled with adorable rodeo-themed items perfect for photos.

There’s something truly special about seeing families dress their little ones in bandanas and tiny cowboy hats.  It brings a sense of normalcy, celebration, and joy during an otherwise challenging time. We are so grateful to the Child Life teams at Texas Children’s Main Campus and Children’s Memorial Hermann for helping us distribute these bags and make these moments possible.

Next, we hosted our “Rodeo Bash” at Texas Children’s Main Campus. We began in the Heart Center, where patients awaiting heart transplants were invited to join the fun. With special appearances from Howdy, Ms. Moo, and Flame the Rodeo Clown straight from the Houston Rodeo, the room quickly filled with laughter and excitement. Patients decorated cowboy hats, painted horses, and most importantly got the chance to simply be kids.

For many of the kids in the Heart Center, hospital stays can last for months and months. Moments like these provide a much-needed break from the routine of treatments and procedures, offering joy, connection, and a sense of celebration.

We then continued the festivities in the West Tower, bringing even more games, activities, and rodeo spirit to patients in The Zone. The energy carried throughout the day, creating meaningful memories for so many families.

We are deeply thankful for every Child Life specialist who helped bring these events to life. Because of their partnership we were able to deliver moments of joy, laughter, and celebration to children who need it most.

This rodeo season, while the city celebrated in big arenas, we’re honored to have created something just as meaningful within hospital walls.
